CHANDIGARH : Congress Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday urged chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to call a meeting with party MPS from Punjab to discuss the cases of sacrilege and police firing and violence at Bargari, Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura.

In a letter to chief minister, Bajwa said the recent high court verdict was a major setback towards ensuring that the perpetrators of this heinous crime were brought to justice, as this issue was of great sentimental significance to the people of the state.

Bajwa said the meeting of MPS called on May 4 to discuss this issue was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that keeping in view the seriousness of pandemic he did not raise the issue at the meeting held on Thursday to discuss the coronavirus situation on Thursday. “The pandemic is a matter of life, and the sacrilege cases are a matter of our identity. We cannot forget our promises to the people of Punjab,” he added, pressing the need for a threadbare discussion as the judgment pronounced on April 9 had become available to the state government two weeks ago.

The Rajya Sabha MP also requested the chef minister that for the discussion to be effective, justice Ranjit Singh (retd), justice Mehtab Singh Gill (retd), director general of police Dinkar Gupta and advocate general Atul Nanda must also be invited to the meet. Last month, he had sought the constitution of a new special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Kotkapura police firing case to give justice to the victims at the earliest. Bajwa also told a private channel that he would contest the state assembly elections due early next year. “I have already conveyed this to the party high command,” he said.
