BJP leader shot dead by terrorists in J&K, 3rd attack in a week
SRINAGAR: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader on Monday was shot dead by terrorists in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said.
Javeed Ahmad Dar, the party’s incharge of Homeshalibugh assembly constituency, was shot dead outside his residence at Homeshalibugh.
Confirming the killing of the 30-year-old, BJP state spokesman Altaf Thakur said: “He (Dar) was a young party leader and constituency incharge of Kulgam.”
“The militants are feeling frustrated and targeting innocents. The killing of unarmed people won’t lead to anything,” he added while appealing to police to nab the killers and punish them sternly.
This is the second killing of a BJP leader in south Kashmir and third attack on a party functionary in the Union territory in the last one week.
“As claimed by the BJP party spokesman, the deceased person was a BJP worker. As per district police, no one had approached for his security. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law,” a police official who did not wish to be named said.
Political leaders from across party lines also condemned the attack on the BJP leader.
“Terrible news from Kulgam. Javeed Ahmad was gunned down in cold blood. I unreservedly condemn this terror attack and send my heartfelt condolences to Javeed’s family and colleagues. May Allah grant him place in Jannat,” National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah tweeted.
Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti said there is no place for such acts of violence. “Condemn the killing of BJP leader Javeed Dar and there is no place for such acts of violence,” she said.
