COPS AMONG 12 INJURED IN ANDHRA COMMUNAL CLASH

HYDERABAD: At least 12 persons, including seven police personnel, were injured in clashes between two groups of religious communitie­s over the constructi­on of a place of worship at Atmakur town in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Saturday night, police said.

As police opened three rounds of fire to control the crowd, the latter resorted to stone pelting and set a few vehicles on fire, police added.

“The situation is under control at present. We have booked five cases against the people involved in the incident, under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including rioting, inciting communal passion and destructio­n of properties,” Atmakur inspector of police B R Krishnaiah told HT on Sunday.according to police, tension broke out after both sides began arguing over the constructi­on of a place of worship by one of them at Thotageri area of the town.
