LUDHIANA: : The Ludhiana police on Tuesday released posters of Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) chief and former MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains as a wanted accused in a rape case, three weeks after he was declared a proclaimed offender by a court here.

The posters have been pasted at public places in the Shimlapuri area and near his house and in the police stations also.

Apart from Bains, the police have released posters of his brothers Karamjeet Singh Bains and Paramjeet Singh Bains, and aides Sukhchain Singh, Pardeep Kumar, Baljinder Kaur and Jasveer Kaur, who are co-accused in the case.

On April 12, judicial magistrate Harsimranjit Kaur had declared Bains a proclaimed offender in the rape case after he neither appeared before court, nor responded to warrants. On April 21, the Division number 6 police had booked him for “nonappearance in response to a proclamation.”

A 44-year-old complainant had alleged that the former Atam Nagar legislator had raped her multiple times after she had approached him for help in a property dispute case.

Though the woman lodged a complaint against Bains on November 16, 2020, a first information report (FIR) was registered on July 7, 2021, on the court’s directions.

Bains is very much active on social networking sites and he

used to update his Facebook page regularly. On Tuesday, he made a post wishing people on Eid. On May 1, he had greeted people on the birth anniversary of Shri Guru Angad Dev ji. However, he had not made any public appearance since April 12.

His mobile phone is on and still the police are struggling to trace his location and arrest him.

National Commission for Woman chairperson Rekha Sharma had rebuked the Ludhiana police on April 12 during her Ludhiana visit for not arresting Bains after the victim approached her. Rekha Sharma had stated that it appeared as the police were not arresting him due to the political pressure.
