Plan to launch 6G services by end of decade, says PM
NEW DELHI: India plans to launch 6G (or sixth generation) telecom services by the end of this decade and a task force has started working in that direction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, underscoring the importance of faster and efficient technology in accelerating development and employment generation.
“Connectivity will determine the pace of progress in 21st century India. Therefore, connectivity has to be modernised at every level,” he said while inaugurating the self-made 5G Test Bed at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The Test Bed is an important step toward self-reliance in critical and modern technology in the telecom sector, he said. “The country’s own 5G standard has been made in the form of 5Gi. It is a matter of great pride for the country. It will play a big role in bringing 5G technology to the villages of the country.”
According to TRAI, 5G is the latest iteration of cellular technology that will provide seamless coverage, high data rate, low latency, and highly reliable communications.
It will increase energy efficiency, spectrum efficiency, network efficiency as well as efficiency of other systems. Besides providing faster and reliable access, it will act as an information duct built to connect billions of Internet of Things (IOT) devices.
India has advocated the 5Gi technology which has been approved by International Telecommunications Union. It facilitates much larger reach of the 5G towers and Radio networks.
Modi said the 5G technology will bring positive changes in the governance of the country, ease of living, and ease of doing business.
“This will boost growth in every sector like agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and logistics. This will also increase convenience and create many employment opportunities,” Modi said.
“For rapid roll-out of 5G, efforts of both the government and industry are needed .” according to minister of state for electronics & information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Digital India is to ensure that Internet reaches and empowers all Indians. Digital India is not only facilitating ease of doing business but also ease of living. It has become the key vehicle for transferring cash subsidy to the accounts of beneficiaries, providing regulatory services to people, introduced faceless assessment of income-tax payers and several such services.
Modi said the telecom sector is a great example of how selfreliance and healthy competition can create a multiplier effect on society and the economy. Coming out of the despair, frustration, corruption, and policy paralysis of the 2G era, the country has moved rapidly from 3G to 4G and now 5G, and 6G, he said.
He said new energy has been infused into the telecom sector with the ‘Panchamrita’ of ‘Reach, Reform, Regulate, Respond and Revolutionise’ in the last eight years. Now the country is going beyond thinking in silos and moving ahead with the “whole of the government approach”, he said.
