3 siblings jump from bridge in panic as train approaches, 1 dies
JAMMU: An 11-year-old girl was killed while her two siblings sustained injuries when they reportedly jumped from a railway bridge after seeing an approaching train in Bajalta area of Jammu district on Wednesday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Hadia Fatima, 11, daughter of Abdul Rashid, a maulvi, who hailed from Kathua but had been living in Bajalta for several years with his family.
“While Hadia Fatima died in the accident, her brother Mohiuddin, 12, and sister Alia, 6, sustained injuries. They were shifted to the government medical college and hospital (GMCH) for treatment,” said a police officer.
“Their father used to drop them at their school (Diamond Public School) in Bajalta, but this morning his children went on their own as he had some work. The children took a short-cut via railway bridge.
When they were on the bridge, they saw Hemkunt Express (from Jammu to Katra) approaching,” the officer said.
“Since the rail bridge had no space on its side, the children panicked and jumped off the
bridge,” he added.
The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CRPC.
GMCH medical superintendent Dr Narinder Bhatial said, “A girl was brought dead to us
while two of her siblings are undergoing treatment.”
“The six-year-old girl has suffered serious injuries, but both of them are responding to the treatment,” the doctor added.
