ROHTAK: A truck driver was killed and at least 40 bus passengers were injured when the two vehicles collided on the Rohtak-jind highway at Julana on Saturday morning.

Police said most of the injured passengers were students returning to Gurugram from Jind after attending a programme at Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University.

The truck driver was yet to be identified.

The injured were rushed to the civil hospital at Julana from where 20 of them were referred to Rohtak’s Post-graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak.

Medical college students protesting against the Haryana government’s bond policy who had called for a shutdown of the outpatient department and elective surgery wards relented and called protesters outside the OPD after getting information about the accident victims arriving.

Dr Ankit Gulia, the president of the Resident Doctors’ Association at PGIMS, said resident doctors and paramedics, who had announced solidarity with the MBBS students, reached the OPD after getting information about the mishap and started treatment of the injured.

An official spokesman of PGIMS said a total of 37 injured people, including school and college students, were admitted here and all of them were out of danger.

“The resident doctors and MBBS students had announced to suspend emergency and OPD services but they resumed their duty to treat the injured persons,” the spokesman added.

Senior administrative officials also visited the PGIMS and interacted with the injured persons.
