‘We let our people write their own cheques’

This company employs a holistic approach to appraisal, giving equal weightage to both the qualitative and quantitative aspects

Hindustan Times (Chandigarh) - Guide - - FRONT PAGE - SUNAINA MATTOO KHANNA, executive vice president & head - hr, bajaj capital limited Coordinated by Nimrata Grewal

Sunaina Mattoo Khanna has been responsible for designing and implementing all the human resource policies that have helped Bajaj Capital Limited grow from strength to strength. It has been under her people-centric approach that the company, with its initial workforce of around 300 employees, has grown to its current workforce strength of over 5000

Why is your company a great place to work in?

Our emphasis is on fostering a family environment in the backdrop of performance culture. This philosophy augurs well for our people who we refer to as teammates instead of employees

Your organisation’s most employee-friendly policy?

All our offices are nosmoking areas. We constantly endeavour to educate our teammates about the benefits of healthy habits through a dedicated e-newsletter. Further, we do not have night shifts as we believe that such shifts interfere with the health of people

What’s the most unique thing about your appraisal system?

Our appraisal parameters are specified in advance and weightage is given to both qualita- tive and quantitative aspects. The review of the team members’ performance is done automatically through a business monitoring software called ‘Wealth Maker.’ Annual appraisals are always done on the basis of average scores secured in the Performance Appraisal Scorecards (MPAS) and the annual appraisal rating is done by the appraiser (where team members are appraised on hygiene factors). About 70% weightage is accorded to MPAS and 30% weightage is given to the annual appraisal rating. We have a “Write your own cheque” philosophy and the entire appraisal system is designed to live up to this philosophy

Does your company use social media for recruitment? Do you also check a candidate’s online social media profile before the hire?

Yes we do use social media to some extent but are not fully dependent on it. On case to case basis, we do check the social media profile of a candidate but we depend more on the feedback of referrals and past employers

How diverse is your workforce? Do you have expatriates on board? If yes, how many and at what level?

We have a mix of young and old team members as we hire highly experienced professionals and freshers at the same time. The gender ratio is also quite healthy and our team members hail from very small towns to big metros
