At R9.5 lakh, one acts pricey

■ SAS NA­GAR: Break­ing all pre­vi­ous records, the start of the new “Q” se­ries saw VIP num­ber "0001" go­ing un­der the ham­mer for Rs 9.5 lakh dur­ing the auc­tion of fancy reg­is­tra­tion num­bers at the of­fice of the dis­trict trans­port of­fi­cer (DTO) here on Tues­day.

“Get­ting “0001” for my Gypsy King was my dream and I could have paid even more to re­alise it,” said Makhan Singh, an agri­cul­tur­ist, who of­fered the high­est bid for PB 65 Q 0001. In­ter­est­ingly, he paid Rs 9.5 lakh to get reg­is­tra­tion num­ber for a ve­hi­cle, which costs around Rs 5.48 lakh. He bought an­other num­ber 0065 for Rs 4 lakh for his Yamaha.

Cash-rich farm­ers, real­tors and busi­ness­men were seen keenly bid­ding for fancy reg­is­tra­tion num­bers for their high-end lux­ury sedans and SUVS.

The dis­trict trans­port of­fice, SAS Na­gar, on Tues­day auc­tioned 347 num­bers, which fetched them Rs 71.24 lakh against the re­serve price of Rs 5.93 lakh.

PB 65 Q 0007 got the sec­ond high­est bid of Rs 7 lakh. The num­ber was bought by Varinder Singh, who sur­prised the of­fi­cials by of­fer­ing a bid of Rs 7 lakh just af­ter the bid reached Rs 1 lakh.

He is an agri­cul­tur­ist who bought the num­ber for his Thar jeep.

“I wanted this num­ber at any cost,” ar­gued Varinder Singh, af­ter whose bid the auc­tion was stopped for some time. The of­fi­cials con­sulted the SDM and his bid was ac­cepted only af­ter he de­posited Rs 1 lakh.

DTO Sukhwinder Kumar said, “The auc­tion of num­ber “PB-65-Q-0001” went for Rs 9.5 lakh. Makhan Singh, a res­i­dent of Chatt vil­lage, bought the num­ber for his Gypsy King. The other num­bers which fetched Rs 1.51 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh were “0006” and “0002”, re­spec­tively.”

He added that 347 num­bers were auc­tioned, which in­cluded the new se­ries PB 65 Q and the re­main­ing 100 num­bers from se­ries PB 65 P.

He added that for the new se­ries, the fancy num­ber 0001 car­ried a re­serve price of Rs 50,000, for num­bers be­tween 0002 to 0009, the re­serve price was 10,000, for num­bers be­tween 0010 to 0100, the re­serve price was Rs 3,000 while for the rest of the num­bers, the re­serve price was Rs 1,000.

He said the DTO earned Rs 61.16 lakh by the auc­tion of the se­ries, whose to­tal re­serve price amounted to Rs 3.81 lakh, while the auc­tion of the “P” se­ries fetched Rs 10.77 lakh against the to­tal re­serve price of Rs 2.12 lakh.
