At R9.5 lakh, one acts pricey
■ SAS NAGAR: Breaking all previous records, the start of the new “Q” series saw VIP number "0001" going under the hammer for Rs 9.5 lakh during the auction of fancy registration numbers at the office of the district transport officer (DTO) here on Tuesday.
“Getting “0001” for my Gypsy King was my dream and I could have paid even more to realise it,” said Makhan Singh, an agriculturist, who offered the highest bid for PB 65 Q 0001. Interestingly, he paid Rs 9.5 lakh to get registration number for a vehicle, which costs around Rs 5.48 lakh. He bought another number 0065 for Rs 4 lakh for his Yamaha.
Cash-rich farmers, realtors and businessmen were seen keenly bidding for fancy registration numbers for their high-end luxury sedans and SUVS.
The district transport office, SAS Nagar, on Tuesday auctioned 347 numbers, which fetched them Rs 71.24 lakh against the reserve price of Rs 5.93 lakh.
PB 65 Q 0007 got the second highest bid of Rs 7 lakh. The number was bought by Varinder Singh, who surprised the officials by offering a bid of Rs 7 lakh just after the bid reached Rs 1 lakh.
He is an agriculturist who bought the number for his Thar jeep.
“I wanted this number at any cost,” argued Varinder Singh, after whose bid the auction was stopped for some time. The officials consulted the SDM and his bid was accepted only after he deposited Rs 1 lakh.
DTO Sukhwinder Kumar said, “The auction of number “PB-65-Q-0001” went for Rs 9.5 lakh. Makhan Singh, a resident of Chatt village, bought the number for his Gypsy King. The other numbers which fetched Rs 1.51 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh were “0006” and “0002”, respectively.”
He added that 347 numbers were auctioned, which included the new series PB 65 Q and the remaining 100 numbers from series PB 65 P.
He added that for the new series, the fancy number 0001 carried a reserve price of Rs 50,000, for numbers between 0002 to 0009, the reserve price was 10,000, for numbers between 0010 to 0100, the reserve price was Rs 3,000 while for the rest of the numbers, the reserve price was Rs 1,000.
He said the DTO earned Rs 61.16 lakh by the auction of the series, whose total reserve price amounted to Rs 3.81 lakh, while the auction of the “P” series fetched Rs 10.77 lakh against the total reserve price of Rs 2.12 lakh.
