■ CHANDIGARH: The police have asked the Chandigarh Housing Board ( CHB) to demolish its pre-fabricated structures in Sector 56 and colony number 4.

The CHB officials in a written communication had asked the police department for setting up of police posts in Sector 56 and Colony Number 4 after a number of thefts were reported by the locals.

However, the SSP office in its reply to the CHB request dated February 24 has asked the board to demolish those structures, which are not in use.

The CHB had spent lakhs of rupees under JNNURM to construct pre-fabricated structures for its slum rehabilitation project. After many slums in the city were demolished, the dwellers had been shifted to these pre-fabricated shelters as a temporary measure, until flats under the slum-rehabilitation scheme were allotted to them.

But, over two dozen shelters are lying vacant and have become spots for hooligans.

to have security check on these shelters has come as a shock to CHB officials, who are now are contemplating a response to the police.

“Our sole purpose was that a police post be created in these two areas, as lot of families are living there and we generally get complaints of hooligans disturbing them. We may go ahead and try to provide security,” said a CHB official.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh SSP Naunihal Singh sad that he was not aware of any such letter sent to the CHB. “I am not aware of the letter and if such a thing has been said by us, there has to be a reason for the same. I will only be able to comment after I go through the content of the letter,” he said.
