FARMERS BLOCK TRAFFIC OVER POWER CUTS
RUPNAGAR: Farmers of various villages of Morinda area chocked the traffic on ChandigarhLudhiana highway near village Marauli Kalan on Monday to protest against the long power cuts being imposed by the Powercom in the area.
The farmers led by Charan Singh Mundian, Rupnagar district president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), sat on dharna on the road and raised slogans against the Punjab government and Powercom officials for their failure to provide adequate power supply for the tubewells to irrigate paddy crops. They also criticised Powercom executive engineer for his failure to redress the problem.
Earlier, the farmers had blocked the traffic at the same place on July 25 and had served an ultimatum to the authorities that they would organise a big dharna and block the road if their demand for ensuring regular supply was not met by July 29.
However, shortly after the blockade the civil and police officials, including Chamkaur Sahib SDM Puneet Goyal reached the spot. However, The farmers insisted that Powercom executive engineer must reach there and explain the position. They even threatened to gherao the power grid at Morinda if the executive engineer did not turn up there.
The blockade was lifted only when executive engineer Jarnail Singh Bains reached the spot and explained the position regarding the power situation in the state.
The farmers also submitted a memorandum to SDM for forwarding the same to the Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
