RUP­NA­GAR: Farm­ers of var­i­ous vil­lages of Morinda area chocked the traf­fic on Chandi­garhLud­hi­ana high­way near vil­lage Ma­rauli Kalan on Mon­day to protest against the long power cuts be­ing im­posed by the Pow­er­com in the area.

The farm­ers led by Cha­ran Singh Mun­dian, Rup­na­gar dis­trict pres­i­dent of Bhar­tiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), sat on dharna on the road and raised slo­gans against the Pun­jab gov­ern­ment and Pow­er­com of­fi­cials for their fail­ure to pro­vide ad­e­quate power sup­ply for the tube­wells to ir­ri­gate paddy crops. They also crit­i­cised Pow­er­com ex­ec­u­tive en­gi­neer for his fail­ure to re­dress the prob­lem.

Ear­lier, the farm­ers had blocked the traf­fic at the same place on July 25 and had served an ul­ti­ma­tum to the au­thor­i­ties that they would or­gan­ise a big dharna and block the road if their de­mand for en­sur­ing reg­u­lar sup­ply was not met by July 29.

How­ever, shortly af­ter the block­ade the civil and po­lice of­fi­cials, in­clud­ing Chamkaur Sahib SDM Puneet Goyal reached the spot. How­ever, The farm­ers in­sisted that Pow­er­com ex­ec­u­tive en­gi­neer must reach there and ex­plain the po­si­tion. They even threat­ened to gherao the power grid at Morinda if the ex­ec­u­tive en­gi­neer did not turn up there.

The block­ade was lifted only when ex­ec­u­tive en­gi­neer Jar­nail Singh Bains reached the spot and ex­plained the po­si­tion re­gard­ing the power sit­u­a­tion in the state.

The farm­ers also sub­mit­ted a mem­o­ran­dum to SDM for for­ward­ing the same to the Pun­jab chief min­is­ter Parkash Singh Badal.
