Burail jail inmate accuses Deshraj of assault
CHANDIGARH: Nishant Sharma, who had hit the headlines for attacking Sikh militant Jagtar Singh Hawara outside district courts complex in November 2011, on Tuesday accused suspended UT SP (city) Deshraj Singh for assaulting him in Burail jail.
He claimed that the IPS officer, behind bars in a corruption case, roughed him up following an argument. However, jail authorities rejected the claims of Sharma.
UT DIG Alok Kumar said, “Sharma did get into a fight with

a fellow prisoner, but Deshraj has nothing to do with the incident.”
Interestingly, Sharma had photocopies of the detailed complaint against Deshraj Singh when he went to hospital for treatment.
The DIG has now marked an inquiry as to how the jail inmate was able to get photocopies of his complaint when there is no such facility on the prison premises.
The DIG said, “We are looking into who was instrumental in getting the prisoner’s complaint photocopied. An inquiry has been initiated to check the reason behind the entire drama.”
A senior jail official said, “There is 100% connivance of the staff that escorted Sharma to the hospital for getting photocopies of his complaint.”
Sharma, who was brought to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, alleged that Deshraj, a triple-murder case accused Suresh Kumar along with another person manhandled him after interrupting his prayer session.
Sharma also claimed that he was being threatened by Deshraj. The jail authorities, however, claimed that Sharma had a scuffle with co-prisoner Suresh Kumar, but was falsely implicating the IPS officer.
When Sharma was escorted by jail staff to the hospital, blue patches due to blood clotting on his face were clearly visible. His hand too was swathed in a bandage. Police cordoned off the area and restrained mediapersons from entering the emergency. HIGH DRAMA AT GMCH-32
High drama was witnessed at GMCH-32 when Sharma was brought to the hospital. Ugly scenes were witnessed as hospital security had arguments with photojournalists, who were denied entry to emergency. Hospital administration said Sharma was thoroughly examined and he had suffered some superficial injuries on his face. There was no deep injury.
