PANCHKULA: Four burglars struck at a jewellery shop in Sector 7 of Panchkula and decamped with valuables worth Rs 35 lakh. The thieves also broke open locks of an adjoining chemist shop and took away unspecified amount of cash.

The area watchman claimed that the four men, including a turbaned person, with muffled faces came to the market after midnight on Wednesday and overpowered him.

The miscreants then broke the locks of Sarao Jewellers, disconnected CCTV cameras and whisked away jewellery items kept there.

It was learnt that the CCTV camera installed in the corridor of Sarao Jewellers works could not capture any image of happenings during night hours in the absence of high-powered camera.

However, footage of the burglars was captured on camera installed outside Arora Jewellers in the neighbourhood.

The footage showed a person with covered face, wearing gloves and carrying an iron rod accosting the watchman of Sarao Jewellers at 1.40am, catching hold of him by the scruff of his neck and forcibly taking him towards a car.

The watchman told police that the four burglars, including a turbaned man, were speaking in Hindi and Punjabi. After collecting the jewellery, the thieves drove away

along with the watchman and dumped him in the forest area of Morni.

Later, the watchman informed police, who reached the spot around 2am on Wednesday.

Interestingly, a police patrol party had visited the Sector 7 market around 1.30am but found nothing amiss.

It was learnt that police had also got CCTV footage from a camera installed at the chemist shop since the thieves did not disconnect it. The footage showed three burglars with covered faced getting out of a Maruti Esteem car.

Meanwhile, police quoted the watchman as saying that the burglars came from behind and threw a blanket on him to overpower him.

Kirpal Nath of Sarao Jewellers told police that he had closed his shop at 9pm on Tuesday.

He came to know about the break-in on early Wednesday morning only.

Gurmel Singh, incharge of Sector 7 police post, said that a case had been registered against the unidentified youths.
