Fire at under-construction cold store in SAS Nagar
SAS NAGAR: A fire broke out at an under-construction cold store of a pizza manufacturing company in Phase 1, industrial area, SAS Nagar, on Wednesday afternoon.
No one was injured in the fire, suspected to be caused by a short circuit in the loose wires hanging along the boundary wall of the building, situated next to Markfed Agro Chemicals.
Surprisingly, no one from the factory informed the fire brigade even though labourers were working on the premises. Firefighters rushed to the spot on their own after seeing clouds of smoke rising into the sky.
Fire officials came across serious violations of fire safety rules on the factory premises, which lacked in firefighting equipment.
A huge quantity of sponge was stored on the premises that caught fire after a spark in the live wires.
“We were not told about the fire. We came to know after we spotted smoke from the spot. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire,” said chief fire officer Sham Lal Kamboj. He said that there was no provision of water on the factory premises. Lose hanging wires and construction material dumped in the backyard prevented movement of fire tenders.
“A six-metre wide area should be left open around the building to facilitate movement of fire tenders in case of fire. But, sponge and construction material blocked our passage,” Kamboj added.
Interestingly, queries of fire officials were stonewalled by those present on the spot.
Firemen had to argue for about 30 minutes with the factory manager, who kept denying initially that he was an employee of the company.
Kamboj asserted that legal action would be taken against firm’s employees since they not only tried to mislead the firefighters but also failed to give material information.
