Rape, murder accused sent to seven-day police custody
DERA BASSI: The 35-year-old man, who was arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a sixyear-old girl, was on Thursday remanded in seven-day police custody.
Shankar Chaudhry was arrested on Wednesday, following which the police had recovered the victim’s body from forests near Dera Bassi.
Suspecting involvement of some other persons in the crime, the police appealed for the accused’s remand, following which the court granted police remand of the accused till December 5.
Chaudhry, who hails from Bihar, was employed by the victim’s father as a daily wager. The victim’s father had also provided rented accommodation to the accused and his brother, Virender, near his house in College Colony, Dera Bassi.
The accused on November 25 had allegedly lured the girl on the pretext of giving her groundnuts. He had then taken her to a nearby forest, where he raped her and later strangled her to death. Dera Bassi police had booked him under sections 364, 376 and 302 of the IPC.
Meanwhile, the victim’s body was handed over to her parents after autopsy at Dera Bassi civil hospital.
