Rape, mur­der ac­cused sent to seven-day po­lice cus­tody

DERA BASSI: The 35-year-old man, who was ar­rested for al­legedly raping and mur­der­ing a sixyear-old girl, was on Thurs­day re­manded in seven-day po­lice cus­tody.

Shankar Chaudhry was ar­rested on Wed­nes­day, fol­low­ing which the po­lice had re­cov­ered the vic­tim’s body from forests near Dera Bassi.

Sus­pect­ing involvement of some other per­sons in the crime, the po­lice ap­pealed for the ac­cused’s re­mand, fol­low­ing which the court granted po­lice re­mand of the ac­cused till De­cem­ber 5.

Chaudhry, who hails from Bi­har, was em­ployed by the vic­tim’s fa­ther as a daily wa­ger. The vic­tim’s fa­ther had also pro­vided rented ac­com­mo­da­tion to the ac­cused and his brother, Viren­der, near his house in Col­lege Colony, Dera Bassi.

The ac­cused on Novem­ber 25 had al­legedly lured the girl on the pre­text of giv­ing her ground­nuts. He had then taken her to a nearby for­est, where he raped her and later stran­gled her to death. Dera Bassi po­lice had booked him un­der sec­tions 364, 376 and 302 of the IPC.

Mean­while, the vic­tim’s body was handed over to her par­ents af­ter au­topsy at Dera Bassi civil hospi­tal.
