Civic body fails to recover R6 crore tax

Hindustan Times (Chandigarh) - Live - - IN & AROUND -

Despite giving several advertisements in the media in 2011 for paying the property tax, the tax branch of the municipal corporation has failed to recover tax from the defaulters amounting to Rs 6 crore in 2011-2012.

Besides, the MC is collecting tax from the buildings under the survey conducted by Punjab Engineering College in 2004. No new survey has been conducted for the past eight years, while many new commercial establishments have come up.

Speaking to HT, chairman of the house tax committee Sat Parkash Aggarwal said, “We have failed to understand why the MC has failed to recover the property tax amounting to Rs 6 crore last year. They only collected Rs 13 crore instead of Rs 19 crore. They are only collecting tax from commercial establishments under the survey conducted in 2004. Many new commercial establishments have come up in the past eight years and they have not even hired an agency to conduct a fresh survey.”
