Beats Jastej S Chinna 2-0; in other last-16 ties, Aman Bhasin, Manav Dhawan win with an identical score of 2-1
CHANDIGARH: Mahesh Chaudhary put up a clinical performance to oust Jastej Singh Chinna (2-0) and book his berth in the quarterfinal round of the snooker event during the second Chandigarh Club Snooker and Billiards Amateur Championship on Thursday.
In the first frame, Chaudhary denied his opponent easy scoring opportunities and won 65-25.
In the second frame, Chinna showed a greater resolve and better game to give Chaudhary a neck-and-neck fight. But Chaudhary prevailed eventually, winning the frame with a 61-54 scoreline.
More intense action was witnessed in the other two snooker quarterfinal encounters, wherein Aman Bhasin and Manav Dhawan emerged victorious with an identical score of 2-1.
Bhasin, pitted against Jaspal Singh, got off to an ideal start by winning the first frame 82-56.
In the next frame, however, brought Jaspal brought his top game to the fore, and won 46-38 to bounce back into the contest.
But Bhasin did well to shrug off the disappointment, and won the deciding frame 75-56 to advance into the last-eight stage.
Dhawan, in his encounter against Vineet Khosla, claimed the opening frame 77-67 to go 1-0 up. In the second frame, Khosla put up a more spirited display to win 45-34. Dhawan, however, got his focus back to win the third frame, and match, 59-50.
In the billiards event, veterans Rajesh Jain and Mahesh Chaudhary took full use of their experience to emerge victorious in their respective encounters.
While Jain got the better of Ajay Gupta 155-145 in a closely fought duel, Bhasin had little trouble in beating Jaspal Singh 151-120.
In other matches, Pankaj Gulati beat Ranveer Duggal 153-111, and Mahesh Chaudhary brought down Sanjeev Sood 151-136.
Pradeep Kinger also tasted success by beating Vineet Khosla 151-138. SAS NAGAR: In an effort to bring all the Regional Coaching Centre (RCC) coaches up-to-date with the latest methodology of coaching, PCA secretary MP Pandove has asked district secretaries to send coaches for short courses at the PCA stadium.
Pandove, who was addressing a meeting of district secretaries said that upgrading their (coaches) knowledge would in turn help in honing the skills of trainees.
“The need for sending an objective report on the trainees being trained at various RCC’s will also help PCA in identifying the talent base,” Pandove said.
The meeting was called to streamline the functioning of the RCC’s. Pandove also exhorted that the district secretaries to take personal interest in overseeing the working of these centres as they form a base from which PCA picks up various age group teams and the senior team to play in the various BCCI tournaments.
Outlining the plans for the offseason, Pandove said that the association was gearing up for the upcoming domestic season with camps at its stadium in SAS Nagar.
The selected players of the various age groups will be called after conclusion of the interdistrict matches.
Punjab has already finished the under-16 tournaments in which Patiala emerged as winner, while Chandigarh was runners-up. The short-listed players of under-16 have already undergone one off-season camp at the stadium. In the second match Patiala will take on hosts Ludhiana at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, while hosts Amritsar will take on Jalandhar at Gandhi Grounds. WOMEN TEAM TRIALS TODAY CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Cricket Association will conduct selection trials for under19 women cricket team for the upcoming Punjab inter-district meet at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, on June 7, 4pm onwards. Players, born on or after January 1, 1994, are eligible to participate in the trials.
