Ma­hesh in snooker quar­ters

Beats Jastej S Chinna 2-0; in other last-16 ties, Aman Bhasin, Manav Dhawan win with an iden­ti­cal score of 2-1

CHANDI­GARH: Ma­hesh Chaud­hary put up a clin­i­cal per­for­mance to oust Jastej Singh Chinna (2-0) and book his berth in the quar­ter­fi­nal round of the snooker event dur­ing the sec­ond Chandi­garh Club Snooker and Bil­liards Am­a­teur Cham­pi­onship on Thurs­day.

In the first frame, Chaud­hary de­nied his op­po­nent easy scor­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties and won 65-25.

In the sec­ond frame, Chinna showed a greater re­solve and bet­ter game to give Chaud­hary a neck-and-neck fight. But Chaud­hary pre­vailed even­tu­ally, win­ning the frame with a 61-54 score­line.

More in­tense ac­tion was wit­nessed in the other two snooker quar­ter­fi­nal en­coun­ters, wherein Aman Bhasin and Manav Dhawan emerged vic­to­ri­ous with an iden­ti­cal score of 2-1.

Bhasin, pit­ted against Jas­pal Singh, got off to an ideal start by win­ning the first frame 82-56.

In the next frame, how­ever, brought Jas­pal brought his top game to the fore, and won 46-38 to bounce back into the con­test.

But Bhasin did well to shrug off the dis­ap­point­ment, and won the de­cid­ing frame 75-56 to ad­vance into the last-eight stage.

Dhawan, in his en­counter against Vi­neet Khosla, claimed the open­ing frame 77-67 to go 1-0 up. In the sec­ond frame, Khosla put up a more spir­ited dis­play to win 45-34. Dhawan, how­ever, got his fo­cus back to win the third frame, and match, 59-50.

In the bil­liards event, vet­er­ans Ra­jesh Jain and Ma­hesh Chaud­hary took full use of their ex­pe­ri­ence to emerge vic­to­ri­ous in their re­spec­tive en­coun­ters.

While Jain got the bet­ter of Ajay Gupta 155-145 in a closely fought duel, Bhasin had lit­tle trou­ble in beat­ing Jas­pal Singh 151-120.

In other matches, Pankaj Gulati beat Ran­veer Duggal 153-111, and Ma­hesh Chaud­hary brought down San­jeev Sood 151-136.

Pradeep Kinger also tasted suc­cess by beat­ing Vi­neet Khosla 151-138. SAS NA­GAR: In an ef­fort to bring all the Re­gional Coach­ing Cen­tre (RCC) coaches up-to-date with the lat­est method­ol­ogy of coach­ing, PCA sec­re­tary MP Pan­dove has asked dis­trict sec­re­taries to send coaches for short cour­ses at the PCA sta­dium.

Pan­dove, who was ad­dress­ing a meet­ing of dis­trict sec­re­taries said that up­grad­ing their (coaches) knowl­edge would in turn help in hon­ing the skills of trainees.

“The need for send­ing an ob­jec­tive re­port on the trainees be­ing trained at var­i­ous RCC’s will also help PCA in iden­ti­fy­ing the tal­ent base,” Pan­dove said.

The meet­ing was called to stream­line the func­tion­ing of the RCC’s. Pan­dove also ex­horted that the dis­trict sec­re­taries to take per­sonal in­ter­est in over­see­ing the work­ing of th­ese cen­tres as they form a base from which PCA picks up var­i­ous age group teams and the se­nior team to play in the var­i­ous BCCI tour­na­ments.

Out­lin­ing the plans for the off­sea­son, Pan­dove said that the as­so­ci­a­tion was gear­ing up for the up­com­ing do­mes­tic sea­son with camps at its sta­dium in SAS Na­gar.

The se­lected play­ers of the var­i­ous age groups will be called af­ter con­clu­sion of the in­ter­dis­trict matches.

Pun­jab has al­ready fin­ished the un­der-16 tour­na­ments in which Pa­tiala emerged as win­ner, while Chandi­garh was run­ners-up. The short-listed play­ers of un­der-16 have al­ready un­der­gone one off-sea­son camp at the sta­dium. In the sec­ond match Pa­tiala will take on hosts Lud­hi­ana at Pun­jab Agri­cul­tural Univer­sity, Lud­hi­ana, while hosts Am­rit­sar will take on Ja­land­har at Gandhi Grounds. WOMEN TEAM TRI­ALS TO­DAY CHANDI­GARH: The Chandi­garh Cricket As­so­ci­a­tion will con­duct se­lec­tion tri­als for un­der19 women cricket team for the up­com­ing Pun­jab in­ter-dis­trict meet at Guru Nanak Pub­lic School, Sec­tor 36, on June 7, 4pm on­wards. Play­ers, born on or af­ter Jan­uary 1, 1994, are el­i­gi­ble to par­tic­i­pate in the tri­als.
