Vijayant ousted in quarters
CHANDIGARH: City tennis player and third seed Vijayant Malik was ousted by eighth seed Karunoday Singh in the quarterfinals of the BR Adityan - GNC ITF Men’s Futures tennis championships at the Gandhinagar Club in Chennai on Thursday.
Malik started well and had little trouble in going one set up in the last eight clash. Malik took the first set 6-4 largely due to forced errors by Karunoday. But the eighth seed did not give up and making a strong comeback took the second set 6-3 to bring the match to an even keel. Not letting up on momentum, Karunoday took the deciding set 6-2 to enter semifinals. Top seed Sriram Balaji ended the run of Mohd Fariz defeating him in straight sets and entered the semifinals.
It would be the second semifinal for Davis Cupper Balaji in two consecutive weeks. However, second seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan seemed to be in a spot of bother against Kaza Vinayak Sharma when the score being 5-5.
Kaza, apparently drained from his three-hour 45 minutes battle yesterday against Ajay Selvaraj, could not continue and had to retire due to cramps. The scorching sun too added to his agony.
Karunodhay will meet Jeevan in the semifinals, his second in two weeks. The fourth quarterfinal between seventh seed Prajnesh Gunneswaranand and fourth seed Toshihide Matsui was postponed to tomorrow due to inclement weather. Results (singles quarterfinals): 1-N Sriram Balaji bt Fariz Mohammed 6-3,62; 8-Karunuday Singh bt 3-Vijayant Malik 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; 2-Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan bt 6-Vinayak Sharma Kaza 5-5 retd.
Vijayant Malik lost to Karunoday Singh 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 in the ITF Men’s Futures Tennis Championship in Chennai on Thursday.
