CBI registers case in Munak canal breach by rioters

NEW DELHI: The CBI has taken over the investigat­ion into the breach of the Munak canal in Sonepat, allegedly by rioting Jats demanding reservatio­n last year causing a disruption in water supply to the national capital. The CBI has registered four FIRs in the matter on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

While one FIR is against nine accused and 3,000 unidentifi­ed others, remaining three are against unidentifi­ed persons.

The breach in the Munak canal by alleged rioters demanding reservatio­n for the Jat community had resulted in disruption of water supply to the national capital on February 21, 2016. The Haryana police had registered four FIRs in the matter. These FIRs have now been re-registered by the agency.

The Delhi Jal Board supplies around 900 MGD of water daily out of which around 600 MGD of raw water comes from the Munak canal. HISAR: A 28-year-old Nepalese man was allegedly killed by his friend whom he tried to stop from stealing beedi from a grocery shop. The victim has been identified Ali, a cook at a hotel in Adampur. Police said the shop owner used to leave his shop keys with Ali. “We came to know from the hotel staff that the accused, who was cleaner in the same hotel, asked Ali to provide the keys of the shop to steal beedi but he refused,” said Krishan Chander, investigat­ing officer. In a fit of rage, the accused allegedly smashed Ali’s face with a heavy object and fled the spot.

A murder case has been registered against the accused.
