Faculty workshop on East Asia on Nov 21

- Sarah Zia

NEW DELHI: The department of East Asian Studies at the University of Delhi is organising a one-day workshop for faculty members who are engaged in teaching papers related to the discipline. The focus areas of the department are Japan, China and the Koreas.

The one-day workshop will be held on November 21 and faculty members affiliated to the university’s colleges focusing on any aspect related to these three regions are eligible to apply for the workshop.

“Those who many not be teaching any related area currently but have an interest in the region’s developments or wish to teach a related paper in the future can also apply,” says Anita Sharma, head of department, department of East Asian Studies.

There are about 25 spots though the department is open to accommodate more candidates based on interest. “I have written to all college principals and asked them to nominate at least one representative from their institution,” says Sharma.

The workshop will comprise lectures by the department’s faculty followed by an interactive session.

During the session, participants will be apprised about the latest geopolitical developments in the region.

“Conventionally, scholarship on this region has focused primarily on China and Japan but over the years, newer issues have gained prominence and the workshop aims to bridge that gap in scholarship,” adds Sharma.

Participants will also receive domain specific detailed digital resources to enable them to follow up on the discussion in the workshop.

“We are collecting in-depth and specialised research that others may not have access to and we will share the same with the participants,” says Rajiv Ranjan, convener of the workshop.

Since undergraduate colleges have limited resources compared to a specialised postgraduate department, faculty members at these colleges may not have access to the latest scholarship or even complex resources like data and maps, he adds.
