MANCHESTER: Substitute Jesse Lingard struck twice in the second half as Manchester United fought back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw with Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Burnley grabbed a surprise third-minute lead when, after a goalmouth scramble, Ashley Barnes fired home from close range and it could have been 2-0 when Scott Arfield’s volley clipped the top of the bar.

United piled on plenty of pressure but Burnley doubled their lead in the 36th minute thanks to a superb curling free kick from 30 yards by Belgian midfielder Steven Defour which beat the diving David De Gea.

United manager Jose Mourinho made a double substitution at the interval and Lingard got the home side back in the game with a clever back-heel flick in the 53rd minute.

Mourinho’s side totally dominated the second half but were frustrated by a sturdy Burnley defence until Lingard drove home the equaliser in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Morata struck his 10th goal of the campaign as Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory over Brighton that moved Antonio Conte’s side to within one point of secondplaced Manchester United.

After struggling to break down Chris Hughton’s side in the first half, the Blues took control with Morata heading the opening goal immediately after the restart before Marcos Alonso added the second on the hour. The home side dominated the second period and the margin of victory could have been much more convincing if Conte’s team had taken their chances.

Bournemouth salvaged a 3-3 draw against West Ham. Hammers scored first through James Collins’ seventh minute header. Dan Gosling equalised in the 29th minute and Nathan Ake put Bournemouth ahead in the 57th minute. Marko Arnautovic scored in the 81st and 89th minutes to put West Ham back in front, Callum Wilson scored the equaliser which visitors claimed was from an offside position.

It is always about improving every year. That's what I always have done throughout my career and it is what I will continue to do.”

club goals he has scored in all competitions in 2017. Only Edinson Cavani and Lionel Messi (50 goals each) have scored more this year in top-five European leagues. “During my three and a half years with

Tottenham, he always surprises me not only with goals but his contribution, with his attitude, professional ethic, how he works across the pitch, he is a massive example for everyone.”

MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager

“You’ve had a magnificent 2017 @Hkane. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in a calendar year. Well done and keep up the good work.”

ALAN SHEARER, on Twitter LONDON: Harry Kane said he was delighted to be mentioned in the same breath as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring a hat-trick in Tottenham‘s 5-2 win over Southampton which sent three prestigious records tumbling.

Kane will end 2017 on 56 goals for club and country, the first player outside of Ronaldo and Messi to finish the year top scorer in Europe since 2009.

He also toppled Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year and became the first player to score six EPL hat-tricks in a year. “I’m very proud of it. Messi and Ronaldo have dominated football for so long, they’re two of the world’s greatest players ever,” Kane told Sky Sports.

“To even be compared to them, to be up there with those sort of stats is a great feeling. All I can do is use that as confidence going into the new year.”

Kane headed in Christian Eriksen’s free-kick in the 22nd minute to overtake Shearer’s 36 goals in 1995 with Blackburn Rovers, a tally he had equalled by scoring three times in Spurs’ 3-0 win at Burnley on Saturday.

Kane slid on his knees on the Wembley pitch after netting the milestone goal while the home fans chanted “Harry Kane: he’s one of our own”.

“It was hard not to think about it, being level going into the game,” Kane added.

“I wanted to win the game but of course I wanted to score as a striker. Getting that record was a great feeling. To get compared to those players — the Messis and Shearers — is what it is all about.”

The double Premier League Golden Boot holder increased Tottenham’s advantage by finishing off a sweeping team move with a tap in from close range in the 39th minute, later hitting his second treble in as many games to

make it 5-1 with a classy chipped finish over Fraser Forster. Kane rounds off the year with 39 league goals and 56 strikes in all competitions for Spurs and England.

GUARDIOLA LOOKS TO ROTATE SQUAD NEWCASTLE:PEP Guardiola will put squad rotation ahead of rewriting the European football history books when runaway leaders Manchester City visit Newcastle on Wednesday.

Guardiola’s side crushed Bournemouth on Saturday to make it 17 successive league victories, two short of the current record for the top five European leagues, set by Bayern Munich.

“Fatigue, I don’t think it will be a problem. It may happen but we’ve a good enough squad,” Guardiola said.

“Gabriel (Jesus) didn’t play against Bournemouth — he played 120 minutes against Leicester (in the League Cup) and he’s the best fighter in the high pressing. He helps us a lot with our intensity. Danilo, Bernardo, (Ilkay) Gundogan all helped us against Bournemouth. We have Yaya (Toure) as well.”
