AMRITSAR : Wanted gangster Gagandeep, alias Gagan Pandit, of Chabhal in Tarn Taran, who had posted on Facebook that he feared being killed by the police after Punjab’s most-wanted gangster Vicky Gounder was shot dead, was arrested in Amritsar on Tuesday.

Linked to Gounder’s gang, he was wanted by police in Amritsar (rural) and Tarn Taran in at least 18 cases, including those of murder, attempt to murder and robbery. Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) Harpreet Singh confirmed that Gagan is a gangster in “B category”. “We have also recovered a country-made pistol from him,” he added.

Gagan is said to be a friend of Amritpal Singh Bath of Mianpur who, along with a man named Lovepreet Singh Nagoke, was nabbed in Khadoor Sahib on Sunday. The police had termed Amritpal and Lovepreet as aides of Gounder and they were booked for providing financial support and shelter to Gounder.

The DSP said Pandit was, however, arrested in a case of a clash which took place between two groups during a wedding in Amritsar on December 11.

Gagan’s brother Amarjit Singh claimed he was being falsely implicated. “Police had booked a Congress leader from Chabhal too in the case, but they have arrested only Gagan.”

Gagan on January 28, after the arrest of Amritpal, had posted a message at his Facebook page, which said: “Amritpal is a very innocent brother of ours, but police have been committing excesses with him. Police falsely implicated him because he wanted to fight election of sarpanch this time. We should help Amritpal, who has no relation with any gangster. We have apprehensions that the police may kill us in an encounter.”
