Jaitu SHO shifted, allegations against him refuse to die down
FARIDKOT : SSP Nanak Singh has transferred Jaitu SHO Gurmeet Singh, whose alleged act of moral policing of three students on January 12 started a chain of events that led to the death of two policemen, to the police lines. “Inspector Jagdev Singh has been given the additional charge of Jaitu police station,” the SSP added.
However, allegations against Gurmeet refuse to die down. On Wednesday, two of the four people whom the police had detained after the deaths of DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu and constable Lal Singh on January 29, held a press conference in the city.
“The police brutality did not end even after the deaths. After being detained, the SHO thrashed us with wooden sticks.
We were pulled by our hair and tortured,” alleged Gurvir Kaur, one of those detained and released on January 30. She and a minor (both from Barnala) addressed the press conference. A leader of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda), Malkit Fauji, was also present.
The two other people the police detained, the father of Usha, the student involved in the January 12 incident, and one Jaspreet Singh were also released on Tuesday.
Punjab DGP Suresh Arora, who attended the cremation of the DSP — held with full state honours — has termed the entire incident as unfortunate. “We will make changes in our training programme so that police personnel can deal with such challenges as well,” added Arora.
Inspector general of police AS Rai; DIG Sukhchain Singh Gill; SSP S Bhoopati and Patiala deputy commissioner Kumar Amit laid floral wreaths on the DSP’S body.
