Perfect GRE score for Mumbai student

- Shreya Bhandary

MUMBAI: Arjun Shah, 20, a student at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga, has managed the rare feat of scoring a perfect 340 out of 340 in the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), required for admission to post-graduate courses in the US.

The third-year chemical engineering student appeared for the test on January 10 this year.

“Even though I could see my score at the time of giving the examination, I was not ready to believe it until I received the official statement of marks. I had spent less than a month preparing for the test and the score is beyond my expectations,” said Shah, a resident of Prabhadevi. This was his first attempt at the test.

Shah spent only 20 days preparing for this test.

“I was busy with my college examinations till mid-december so I officially started preparing for Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) post December 20. I spent almost five hours a day appearing for mock tests and studying,” said Shah.

While the admission season for universities in the US will begin towards the end of the year, Shah had attempted the exam as a ‘trial round’.

“I’m very happy with the result,” he said. Managing a perfect score in the Graduate

EVEN THOUGH I COULD SEE MY SCORE AT THE TIME OF GIVING THE EXAMINATION, I WAS NOT READY TO BELIEVE IT UNTIL I RECEIVED THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF MARKS.

Record Examinations (GRE) is not an easy task.

“It’s a very comprehensive exam and only 0.3-0.5% students manage a perfect score,” said Prashant Nair from a Mumbai institute that trains students for competitive examinations.

Shah plans to finish his chemical engineering degree in the city and then apply for a Master’s in the US.

“I would like to apply to the best universities in the US, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Hopefully everything will work out well,” he said.
