Youth finds younger sis­ter talk­ing to boyfriend, pushes her into canal

PA­TIALA : In what ap­pears to be a case of hon­our killing, a youth al­legedly pushed his 19-year-old younger sis­ter into the Bhakra canal af­ter he caught her talk­ing to her boyfriend over phone at Near Cen­tury En­clave of Pa­tiala.

The body of the vic­tim, Preeti, is yet to be re­cov­ered as po­lice be­lieve it might have been washed away due to strong wa­ter cur­rents.

The po­lice have regis­tered a case of un­der Sec­tion 302 (mur­der) of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC) against Ba­hadur Singh (23) who con­fessed to have com­mit­ted the crime.

Deputy su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice (DSP) Sourav Jin­dal said the po­lice re­ceived a call from Preeti’s mother Su­naari Devi on Thurs­day morn­ing that Ba­hadur had killed her daugh­ter.

“A team im­me­di­ately rushed to the spot for in­ves­ti­ga­tion. The fam­ily handed over the ac­cused to the po­lice,” the DSP said.

Dur­ing in­ter­ro­ga­tion, the ac­cused said he got en­raged af­ter he found his sis­ter talk­ing to her boyfriend on phone around 12:30am, the po­lice said.

“He took his sis­ter to the canal side and warned her against talk­ing to her boyfriend. She took it lightly and laughed at him. On this, he got in­fu­ri­ated and pushed her into the canal,” the DSP said.

“He re­turned home fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent. The mat­ter came to light when his mother in­quired about her daugh­ter’s where­abouts. He then his fam­ily that he had thrown Preeti into the canal,” the DSP said.

The vic­tim’s mother claimed that Ba­hadur is a drug ad­dict and of­ten had a heated ar­gu­ment with his wife on Thurs­day night.

The po­lice said a team of divers was de­puted in the canal to search of the vic­tim’s body.
