Youth gets 6-year jail for snatch­ing

KARNAL: Send­ing a strong mes­sage to snatch­ers, a 24-year-old youth con­victed of snatch­ing a wal­let from a woman in Ku­ruk­shetra was awarded six years in jail by the Ku­ruk­shetra dis­trict court on Wed­nes­day.

While pro­nounc­ing the judg­ment, ad­di­tional dis­trict and ses­sions judge Sub­hash Chand Saroi also im­posed a fine of ₹25,000 on the con­vict. Dis­trict deputy at­tor­ney Sashi Bho­ria said vic­tim Nee­lam Rani had filed a po­lice com­plaint al­leg­ing that a youth had snatched her purse when she was in Sec­tor 13 of Ku­ruk­shetra on June 21 last year.

She said the purse con­tained ₹11,000, ATM card and a cheque book. Work­ing on her com­plaint, the Ku­ruk­shetra po­lice traced the ac­cused, who was iden­ti­fied as Gau­rav Ahija of Khjur Na­gar Pa­ni­pat and was ar­rested on July 13, 2017. The po­lice also re­cov­ered ₹4,000 from his possession. He was booked un­der Sec­tion 379-A (snatch­ing) of the In­dian Pe­nal Code.
