VARANASI FLYOVER COLLAPSE A LESSON
The editorial ‘Cutting corners on infrastructure projects’ (May 17) has justly blamed the unholy politician-bureaucrat-builder nexus which is responsible for the collapse of a Varanasi flyover, killing 17 people. The fact that it was built in February shows that there is neither transparency in awarding construction contracts nor there is any accountability clause for durability and life-span of the structure. Corruption is the rootcause behind the substandard infrastructure. Most of the projects are undertaken without proper planning with scant regard for engineering norms. Deadlines for completion are not adhered to.
