DRUG ABUSE: CENTRE NEEDS TO STEP IN

Apropos ‘The Centre must help Punjab (HT, August 1)’, once known for its prosperity, Punjab has been rattled by the zombie of drug addiction. Subsequent government­s have failed to stem the rot. The situation has worsened despite measures by the state government like rehabilita­tion centres across the state. The Union government should tackle this alarming situation before it is too late.

Chandigarh kind of person who harbours any animosity towards India. It is appreciabl­e that PM Narendra Modi has congratula­ted Imran Khan on his victory. This is a time for India to reciprocat­e Imran’s goodwill gesture towards India and engage in a fruitful bilateral dialogue with Pakistan on all issues.

Devendra Khurana a bill that mandates death for child rape convicts. However, in most cases the young offender doesn’t even realise that what he’s doing is a heinous crime. Similarly, the victim doesn’t know how to recognise and speak up against it. To quench their curiosity, children are using adult sites because they can’t find answers elsewhere. And they are making wrong perception­s about sex and women. It is high time for our government and education system to make sex education comprehens­ive in schools. It will help the young generation differenti­ate between right and wrong. We must not shy away from this topic.

Ritu Arya and underlines the need for course correction. Instead of a free travel policy, the government should consider giving free travel facility not to different categories of citizens, but on the basis of income status. This solution will ensure that only financiall­y backward avail free or concession­al travel in state transport buses. The government can easily map out the financial status of citizens based on census parameters and draft a new policy.

Shefeeque Ali assuming power after the great Chinese Revolution Comrade Mao Tsetung forcefully stopped cultivatio­n of opium, and China became free of drugs within three years. The Punjab government, too, needs a multiprong­ed strategy to deal with the drug menace.
