Gang that looted ₹7.8 lakh from Faridkot bank busted

BATHINDA : Police claim to have busted a 11-member gang of bank robbers with the arrest of five men from Mari village under Nathana police station on August 15 (Wednesday).

In its latest strike on August 7, the gang had looted ₹7.8 lakh from a Punjab and Sind Bank branch at Doad village in Faridkot. Police say with their arrest, they are close to solving 21 bank robberies. Three rifles and ₹2.75 lakh have been recovered from the accused.

They are kingpin Jasvir Singh of Bajeana, Iqbal Singh, Gurlal Singh, Satpal Singh of Kalyan Sukha village and Sukhdeep Singh of Chak Janisar village near Jalalabad.

Jasvir, Iqbal and Sukhdeep were involved in the August 7 robbery. SP (investigat­ion) Swaran Singh Khanna said, “An 11-member gang has been targeting banks in the region. We are still to arrest Sukhmandar Singh, Krishan Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Pradhan and Ravi, who

are accomplice­s of the men we have held on Friday. The gang was involved in at least 21 cases of bank robberies.”

Previously, the gang had looted ₹ 6 lakh from a cooperativ­e bank branch in Harraipur in Bathinda and ₹1 lakh from the same bank’s branch in Utan village in Mansa in January 2016.

The gang also looted ₹40,000 from the cooperativ­e bank branch in Chauke village, ₹5.5 lakh from a branch at Ladhuwal Utar village in Jalalabad and ₹12 lakh from an SBI branch in Sarawan Bodla in Muktsar.
