KARNAL: The police claimed to have busted a bike lifters’ gang with the arrest of six of its members and recovery of 15 stolen bikes from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Vikram Singh and Sandeep of Karnal’s Fafdana village, Rajat Kumar and Joginder Singh of Sambhli village, and Anoop Kumar and Balraj Singh of Karnal’s Assandh.

The police have also arrested another man identified as Vikram of Ballah village for allegedly purchasing a stolen bike from them.

The accused were in the age group of 18 to 24 years, police said, adding that the gang used to carry out thefts in three groups and was active at several locations in the district for the past few months.

Giving this information, Rohtash Singh, in-charge of the antiauto theft team of Karnal police’s Crime Investigation Agency, said they had received a tip-off about the accused.

“They were arrested in separate surprise raids conducted at different locations by police teams,” he added.

“The arrest of these accused has helped the police to solve several cases of bike theft in the district. They will be produced in a court and police will take their remand for further interrogation,” Rohtash added.

However, it is not the first such incident when the youths were arrested for vehicle thefts.

In May this year, the Karnal police had arrested four persons, including Ankit Kumar, his brother Kuldeep Singh of Pastana village of Karnal, Sumit Kumar of Vasant Vihar in Karnal and Akshay Kumar of Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, for their involvement in several cases of bike thefts.

The police had also recovered 15 stolen bikes from their possession.

Also in May, the police had arrested a 19-year-old Class-12 student Shivam Mehra and a 20-year-old college dropout Rahul Kumar for their alleged involvement in at least nine cases of snatching and bike theft.

The arrest of these youths, who were avid boxing players, had sent shock waves in police circles as father of one of the accused was an inspector.
