Three open fire at police team, booked for attempt to murder

Trio was on the way to smuggle liquor from Amritsar to Jandiala, say police

AMRITSAR: The district rural police booked three alcohol smugglers for allegedly opening fire at a police team near Nijjar toll plaza at Amritsar-delhi national highway, on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Dalbir Singh aka Veeru of Jeevan Pandher village, Ravaljit Singh aka Sonu of Timowal village and Gopi of Rampura Jhita village in Amritsar.

The team comprising five policemen and two secret informers was attacked by the trio, when they tried to stop the accused, said police.

LIQUOR WAS LOADED IN A MINI TRUCK

The accused, who were in a Hyundai i-20 car were on their way to smuggle alcohol laden in a mini truck.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sarwan Singh of Jandiala police station said that he along with other cops had laid a naka near Nijjar toll plaza. “The accused were on their way from Amritsar to Jandiala with a mini truck laden with alcohol following them,” said the ASI.

“When we tried to stop the accused for checking, instead of making a halt, they shot at us twice,” said the ASI.

After firing, the accused reversed their vehicle and also called the driver of the mini truck asking him to reverse the vehicle, said police. “We tried to follow the accused and the minitruck but they managed to escape from the spot,” said police.

Sub-inspector (SI) Ram Singh of Jandiala police station, who is investigat­ing the case, said, “Following a complaint from ASI Sarwan Singh, a case has been registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 25-54-59 of the Arms Act and 61-1-14 of the Excise Act against the accused, who are absconding.”
