In JMC, BJP emerges single largest party

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF JAMMU MUNICIPAL CORPORATIO­N SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2005, THE BJP GAINED A CLEAR MAJORITY

JAMMU : With 212 municipal wards in its kitty, out of a total 521 wards in ten districts of Jammu region, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday emerged as the largest party in the Jammu province while independen­t candidates have won a majority number of seats in the Srinagar Municipal Corporatio­n.

In ten districts of the regionrajo­uri, Poonch, Kathua, Udhampur, Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Reasi and Samba, the BJP candidates won 212 wards followed by the Congress with 110 wards, Panthers Party with 13 and independen­ts taking away 185 wards.

“The state people have given bumper votes to the BJP and it’s a landslide victory of the party. It’s the victory of the people, of democracy and of our Prime Minister,” said state BJP president Ravinder Raina.

In Jammu Municipal Corporatio­n, the BJP emerged as a single largest party, signalling that its base in urban Jammu is still intact.

While the party emerged victorious by winning total 43 seats, the independen­t candidates also presented a good show, winning a total of 18 seats in the JMC.

“Which Congress and where is Congress?, There was none in the fray against us. Yes, we did have certain contest from rebel party candidates. Now, we can say that today we have Congress-mukt Jammu and Congress-mukt Kashmir,” he added.

For the first time in the history of Jammu Municipal Corporatio­n since its inception in 2005, the BJP gained a clear majority.

High drama was witnessed at ward number 11 (Mohalla Malhotrian) during the counting process where recounting was held thrice after Bharatiya Janata Party raised objections.
