HC upholds move to give addl marks for higher qualification

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday upheld the Haryana government’s decision to grant additional marks to persons with higher qualification and those with no family members in government service, during recruitment of constables in Haryana police.

Dismissing a batch of petitions against the government’s decision, the high court bench of justice AB Chaudhari and justice HS Madaan referring to a provision on granting additional marks to those with no one in government employment said that such a provision is praiseworthy as no state in the country has made such a provision or recognised the unfortunate deprivation of not having employment in government departments.

The court was hearing a batch of appeals against additional marks being given to post graduates, those with no one from family in government jobs and additional marks for candidates from de-notified nomadic tribe for the recruitment of constables in Haryana police.

“This would certainly be helpful to the government because of the higher education levels of police constables. It would benefit the state and public at large,” the court said on additional marks to those with higher qualifications.

It is a known fact that a major reservation goes to other reserved categories as against denotified tribe (Vimukt Jatis and Tapriwas Jatis) or nomadic tribes.

This class of tribe hardly have any representation in the government employment, the court said on additional marks to candidates of nomadic tribe.
