’84-riot victims call on Modi
FAMILIES ALLEGED THAT THE CONGRESS HAD BEEN SHELTERING ITS LEADERS INVOLVED IN THE GENOCIDE
CHANDIGARH: The 1984 anti-sikh riots victims met Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Union cabinet meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday and urged him to take steps to ensure all accused are brought to justice.
The victims were accompanied by a delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), led by its president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal.
In their meeting with the PM, the families alleged that the Congress had been sheltering its leaders involved in the genocide and pointed out the elevation of Kamal Nath as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Bibi Jagdish Kaur and Bibi Nirpreet Kaur, whose family members were killed in the riots, said they feared for their lives as they had testified against the Congress leaders. Later, Harsimrat Kaur Badal tweeted, “It was heart-wrenching to listen to travails of 1984 genocide victims when they met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But it was heartwarming that justice for ‘84 massacre has become a national priority now. I thank Modi ji for making this happen.”
The minister said Modi commended the victims for their fight for justice.
Party MP Naresh Gujral, who was accompanying the victims, said they all got very emotional after meeting Modi and sought protection from him, which was assured by the Prime Minister.
