CHANDIGARH: The Motor Accidents Claim Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of ₹16.8 lakh and ₹12.3 lakh to the family of two brothers who were killed after the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a truck near Kuhariyan Wali in Fazikla district in April 2018.

The accident took place on April 18, 2018, when victims Jasveer Singh and Gurdev Singh, both in their 20s, were going from Kuhariyan to Fazilka on a motorcycle. When they reached near Kuhariyan Wali bus stop, a truck (PB05-L-9707), driven by one Makhan Singh, came from the opposite side and rammed into the motorcycle. Jasveer died on the spot, while Gurdev was taken to Gangaram Bansal Hospital in Sri Ganganagar, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The families of the victims moved an application for compensation in the MACT. The application was moved by Jasveer’s widow Foolan Rani, and parents Lalo Rani and Bagicha Singh. It was stated in the application that the victims were working in a brick kiln and were earning ₹12,000 each per month.

A notice was issued to truck driver Makhan Singh and owner Subhash Chander. In their reply, they said no accident took place with the truck and a false case was registered against the driver to claim compensation.

After hearing the arguments and the facts on record, the tribunal granted the compensation, to be paid jointly by the truck driver, owner and United India Insurance Company.
