AM­RIT­SAR :An as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice was ar­rested for beat­ing a sadhu to death in Aj­nala on, 20 km from the dis­trict head­quar­ters, po­lice said.

The de­ceased has not been iden­ti­fied yet but ASI At­tar Singh had been posted at Mohkam­pura po­lice sta­tion.

The in­ci­dent took place at around 8:30pm on Satur­day when the ASI was on his way from Mohkam­pura po­lice sta­tion to his home in Jagdev Khurd vil­lage, in Aj­nala tehsil.

Sta­tion house of­fi­cer (SHO) of Aj­nala po­lice sta­tion Paramjit Singh said, “The ASI was in his Maruti Suzuki car. When the ASI reached in Aj­nala mar­ket, he saw the sadhu in the mar­ket and started beat­ing him.”

He said, “As per the eye­wit­nesses, the ASI was heard say­ing that sadhu is a Pak­istani agent. While thrash­ing him, ASI also forced him to go to po­lice sta­tion.”

Se­nior su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice (SSP) (ru­ral) Param­pal Singh said the ASI was in ine­bri­ated con­di­tion and left the sadhu in crit­i­cal con­di­tion. “With the help of passerby, sadhu was ad­mit­ted to Aj­nala civil hos­pi­tal where doc­tors have de­clared him dead,” he said.

He said the ASI has been ar­rested after be­ing booked un­der Sec­tion 304 (pun­ish­ment for cul­pa­ble homi­cide not amount­ing to mur­der) of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC) at Aj­nala po­lice sta­tion.

The ASI was also pre­sented be­fore the duty mag­is­trate in Aj­nala on Sun­day.
