Left-wing party deplores ‘excesses’ in panchayat polls

FREE FLOW OF LIQUOR, MONEY, MUSCLE POWER AND MISUSE OF THE GOVERNMENT MACHINERY IN THE ELECTIONS WAS DEPLORED IN MEETING

CHANDIGARH:IN a meeting of Punjab State Committee of the Marxist Communist Party of Indian (MCPI) (United) on Sunday concerns were raised on the alleged excesses in panchayat elections.

Free flow of liquor, money, muscle power and misuse of the government machinery was deplored.

The state committee welcomed the opening up of the Kartarpur corridor between India and Pakistan and hoped that it would work as a bridge between the people of the two countries and will reduce tension at the border.

Presenting a report, Kuldip Singh said the economic and political situation in India was distressing. Prem Singh Bhangu gave a brief report on the party organisation and its mass organisations, especially on the trade union, and the Kisan front and expressed complete satisfaction on nationwide strike on January 8-9, a call that the Central Trade Unions had given.

‘LAW AND ORDER SITUATION BAD IN PUNJAB’

“Law and order situation in Punjab has totally collapsed and drug related deaths and its supply is going on as usual,” the meeting claimed. The state committee also supported the demands of government employees and pensioners and asked the government to accept them.

The meeting was held at the KK Kaushal Memorial Bhawan in Doraha. Prem Singh Nanva presided the meeting in which members from Patiala, Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Mohali were present.

DELEGATES FROM PUNJAB TO TAKE PART IN CONCLAVE

It was also decided that about 50 delegates from Punjab will participate in the 4th All-india Conference of MCPI (United) to be held at Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala, starting on February 8.

It urged upon the central and the state governments to fulfil promises made in the elections and condemned the government for failing to check the increasing prices of all essential commodities.
