FARIDKOT : The court of judicial magistrate (first class), Faridkot, Ekta Uppal extended the police remand of inspector general (IG) of police Paramraj Singh Umranangal by three days in connection with the 2015 police firing at Kotkapura.

Umranangal, who was arrested from the Punjab Police headquarters in Chandigarh on Monday by the special investigation team (SIT) probing the firing incidents, was sent to four-day police remand on Monday.

He will now be produced in the court on February 26.

Faridkot district attorney Rajneesh Goyal, who appeared for the SIT, argued that the IG was not cooperating in the probe.

The accused is not disclosing the contents of calls between him (Umranangal) and then director general of police Sumedh Singh Saini before the firing incident.

The SIT also produced a video in the court to buttress its claim of a peaceful anti-sacrilege protest at Kotkapura.

In the video, cops are seen thrashing Ajit Singh (complainant in the case) even after he received a bullet injury.

The SIT also informed the court that the SDM gave clearcut orders to fire in the air and not on protesters.

Pleading that Umranangal has been implicated in the case, the defence too produced a video in the court showing some antisacrilege protesters setting a police vehicle on fire.

In the Kotkapura incident, a case was registered on August 7, 2018, under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Arms Act against unidentified cops.

Later, the SIT added more sections, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information) and 218 (public servant framing incorrect record) of IPC were added in both the cases, Section 34 (done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) to the case.
