Poll violence: Cong dist chief among 68 booked

BATHINDA/SANGRUR/MANSA: As many as 68 people, including Bathinda Congress district president Khushbaz Singh Jatana, have been booked in poll-related violence in the state on Sunday.

In a cross case, police have booked seven workers of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in connection with the clash that took place between SAD and Congress workers outside a polling station at Talwandi Sabo during voting for Lok Sabha polls here on Sunday.

On the complaint of Ranjit Singh, an assistant of district Congress (rural) president Khushbaz Singh Jatana, a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and under Arms Act has been registered against SAD workers Jalour Singh and his son Gursharan Singh, Ranjit Singh Malkana and his son Nippi Malkana, Sukhwinder Kaur, Amarjit Kaur and Tarsem Sharma.

Complainan­t alleged that he along with other Congress workers had gone outside a polling station after learning that SAD workers were distributi­ng money among the voters. When confronted , SAD leaders led by former MLA Jeetmohind­er Singh Sidhu and Sukhvir Singh Chatha attacked us and opened fire on us, he said.

However, the FIR found the complaint against Sidhu and Chatha suspicious and an inquiry was ordered into it, police said.

Registerin­g a cross case in the matter, Congress leaders have been named in the same FIR registered against Jatana and eleven other Congress workers .

CONG WORKERS CLASH IN SANGRUR, 18 BOOKED

SANGRUR:THE police have booked 18 persons in connection with an attack on three Congress workers at Ealwal village by another group of the party workers on Sunday.

A case has been registered against 13 men by name and 5 unknown people at Sadar police station, Sangrur, police said on Monday. All the accused were from Ealwal village.

DSP (rural) Satpal Sharma said Sukhwinder and Singara are key accused, who are absconding.

“The incident was fallout of an old enmity,” said DSP Sharma.

The police registered the case on the complaint of Ealwal Sarpanch Baldev Singh under Sections 307 , 324 , 323 341 and 506 and other relevant sections of the IPC.

Baldev Singh said that he along with his friends —Mandeep Singh, Harbans Singh and Baljinder Singh—had gone to cast vote on Sunday when the accused attacked them.

SIX SAD WORKERS BOOKED IN MANSA

MANSA: Six SAD workers have been booked for pelting stones on Congress workers at a booth at Chainewala­villageund­erjhunir block here, police said .

“The charges have been framed on the complaint of Gurpyar singh, a Congress worker,” said Jhunir police station Inspector Harjeet Mann.

GURDASPUR: Punjab BJP executive committee member Joginder Singh Chhina filed a complaint on Monday alleging attack by 17 persons when he had gone to cast vote at Awankha village here.
