KARNAL:A complainant in a criminal case was allegedly attacked outside a courtroom in Kaithal district court on Monday.

Police said Hukam Chand of Kalayat town in Kaithal district, sustained multiple injuries in the attack.

He was rushed to Kaithal civil hospital, which referred him to PGI Chandigarh, the police added.

Three people attacked Chand with knives and other sharpedged weapons when he was going to record his statement in a case he had filed last year, the police said, adding that sub-inspector Rekha, who was on the court premises, overpowered the attackers with the help of the people present there.

The attackers had been identified as Pradeep Kumar, Somvir Singh and Sagar, all are residents of Narwana town in Jind district, the police added.

Kaithal superintendent of police (SP) Waseem Akram said Chand’s family members told the police that one of the accused, Pradeep, had attacked him in June last year also due to old rivalry.

However, Chand and other people present there caught Pradeep, thrashed him and filed a police complaint, the SP said.

Pradeep, who wanted to take revenge, and two others attacked Chand when he reached the district court, he said.

The attackers had been booked for attempt to murder and under other relevant sections of the IPC.

The SP said Pradeep and Somvir were already facing criminal cases and were on bail.

An inquiry had been ordered to find out how they entered the court with weapons, the SP added.
