GURUGRAM: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Gurugram on Sunday, the police said. He has alleged in a suicide note that his in-laws were harassing him for money since his marriage last year, investigating officials said.

The man’s family members alleged in a first information report (FIR) that his wife’s parents and three brothers, who stay in Pataudi, started demanding money from him soon after the couple got married in May last year, the police said. His wife’s family members have assaulted him at least thrice in the past year, according to the FIR.

“His father-in-law, mother-inlaw, three brothers-in-law and another relative used to demand money from him every month. Whenever he refused, they would threaten and assault him. In July last year, his in-laws came to our house at night with at least 25 people and assaulted him. After the birth of his daughter in December 2018, similar incidents took place at least twice,” the man’s father said in the FIR.

A day prior to the alleged suicide, the man had gone to his in-laws’ house in Pataudi to bring back his wife and daughter, who had been staying there since May 10, his family said.

“After he returned alone the following day around 3.30 pm, he appeared to be disoriented. He asked his mother for a cup of tea and went to his room,” his uncle told HT. When his mother took the tea to his room, she found him hanging from the ceiling fan, the uncle said.

The man, who worked as a mason, has identified six people, including his father-in-law, mother-in-law, three brothers-inlaw and the husband of his wife’s sister, in his suicide note, which was recovered from the pocket of the trousers he was wearing at the time of the alleged suicide, said Krishan Kant, station house officer (SHO), Farrukhnagar police station. He did not mention his wife’s name in the suicide note and there was no date or signature on it, Kant said. Case of abetment to suicide registered.
