Bandaru Dattatreya sworn in as HP governor
SHIMLA: Former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya was sworn in as the governor of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Dattatreya replaced Kalraj Mishra who was appointed as the governor of Rajasthan.
Chief secretary Shrikant Baldi read out the warrant of appointment and justice DC Chaudhary of the Himachal high court administered the oath of office.
After assuming his office, Dattatreya said his priority will be to promote tourism in the state, especially religious tourism: “Himachal is called dev bhumi (the land of gods) and veer bhumi (the land of brave hearts). It has a large potential to draw tourists. Its rich tradition and culture make Himachal distinctive. I am fortunate to have been given this opportunity to serve Himachal.”
“I had a long stint in politics but now I have a new responsibility. My endeavour will be to give an impetus to development while working within the purview of the constitution,” he said, adding that he will focus on issues such as quality education and spreading awareness about drug addiction.
He said it was important to preserve nature and that though the literacy rate in Himachal was high, it would be better if education needs were linked to employment. He said he will ensure all programmes and schemes were implemented correctly.
Secretary to the governor Rakesh Kanwar obtained the signature of the governor on the charge certificate.
Vidhan Sabha speaker Dr Rajiv Bindal, former chief ministers Virbhadra Singh and Prem Kumar Dhumal, education minister Suresh Bhardwaj, social justice and empowerment minister Dr Rajiv Saizal were also present.
