Bandaru Dattatreya sworn in as HP governor

SHIMLA: Former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya was sworn in as the governor of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Dattatreya replaced Kalraj Mishra who was appointed as the governor of Rajasthan.

Chief secretary Shrikant Baldi read out the warrant of appointmen­t and justice DC Chaudhary of the Himachal high court administer­ed the oath of office.

After assuming his office, Dattatreya said his priority will be to promote tourism in the state, especially religious tourism: “Himachal is called dev bhumi (the land of gods) and veer bhumi (the land of brave hearts). It has a large potential to draw tourists. Its rich tradition and culture make Himachal distinctiv­e. I am fortunate to have been given this opportunit­y to serve Himachal.”

“I had a long stint in politics but now I have a new responsibi­lity. My endeavour will be to give an impetus to developmen­t while working within the purview of the constituti­on,” he said, adding that he will focus on issues such as quality education and spreading awareness about drug addiction.

He said it was important to preserve nature and that though the literacy rate in Himachal was high, it would be better if education needs were linked to employment. He said he will ensure all programmes and schemes were implemente­d correctly.

Secretary to the governor Rakesh Kanwar obtained the signature of the governor on the charge certificat­e.

Vidhan Sabha speaker Dr Rajiv Bindal, former chief ministers Virbhadra Singh and Prem Kumar Dhumal, education minister Suresh Bhardwaj, social justice and empowermen­t minister Dr Rajiv Saizal were also present.
