BAREILLY: The Uttar Pradesh police on Monday said they have recovered around 250 kg of gunpowder while it was being transported from Farrukhabad to Pilibhit in five gunny sacks in violation of rules on a state road transport bus. The recovery was made on the basis of intelligence inputs received on Sunday.

Senior police superintendent Shailesh Pandey said it seems the gunpowder was meant for manufacturing firecrackers. “...approximately 250 kilograms of low-quality explosives [was recovered] from a Pilibhitbound UPSRTC [Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation] bus. The explosive material was loaded at Farrukkhabad...,” he said. “Such explosives are dangerous and cannot be carried on a public transport vehicle.”

Gunpowder is an explosive mixture of potassium nitrate, sulphur, and charcoal and is used in cartridges and fireworks.

Police officers aware of the probe in the case said a small amount of the explosive was burnt at a deserted location and it burned like fireworks.

A sample of the gunpowder has been sent for lab testing, they added.

The officers said one Sudhir, a resident of Ghoror in Mainpuri, who has been arrested in connection with the recovery, has told them he had no information about the explosives and that a porter promised him ~150 per bag to take them to Pilibhit.

They added bus driver Manish and conductor Sudheer Kumar have told police the sacks were loaded by an unidentified man, who told them that another person would be waiting at the Pilibhit bus stand to receive the consignment. Two police teams have been sent to Farrukhabad and Pilibhit to arrest the main supplier and the receiver of the gunpowder.?
