Fresh spell of snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal

- HT Correspondents

JAMMU: After remaining shut for a day, the 270km-long arterial Jammu-srinagar national highway, was partially restored to clear vehicles stranded along the highway since Thursday evening.

The highway was closed on late Thursday evening, after landslides triggered by incessant rainfall blocked the road at Panthyal and Cafeteria Morh in Ramban district, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

Since then, vehicular traffic on the highway from Jammu or Srinagar remained suspended.

The higher reaches of Kashmir received a fresh spell of snowfall on Thursday night while rain lashed other parts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The sudden closure of the highway—the only road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country— left over 1,500 vehicles stranded on the highway.

However, the men and machinery engaged in four-laning of the Ramban-banihal section, were able to clear off the debris and landslides from both Panthyal and Cafeteria.around 1pm, the traffic police gave a go ahead to clear the stranded vehicles.a report had earlier mentioned that about 1,000 Jammu-bound vehicles, mostly trucks, stranded in between the Qazigund and Ramban section have been cleared and were on their way to Jammu.“despite rain, the traffic is moving smoothly since Friday afternoon. About 1,000 Jammubound vehicles have been cleared so far. If the weather remains fine, we may allow Kashmir-bound trucks carrying essential supplies from Jammu in the late evening,” said, Ajay Anand, deputy superintendent of police (traffic), Ramban.
