Panipat woman sub-inspector held for extortion, bribe
Surrenders at police station; was in cahoots with a 40-yr-old woman who had accused 3 men of gangraping her
KARNAL: Panipat police on Monday arrested a woman sub-inspector for her alleged involvement in a honeytrap case that surfaced a couple of days ago in the city.
As per the information, the sub-inspector posted in Chandnibagh police station was produced in a local court, which sent her to judicial custody.
A special investigation team (SIT) led by Panipat deputy superintendent of police (DSP) (women) had recently arrested a 40-year-old woman in the honeytrap case, in which the role of woman sub-inspector was also suspected.
The cop is reportedly associated with the woman, who had on February 22 filed a complaint against three Panipat-based men — including a scrap dealer — accusing them of gangraping her at her residence after giving her some sedative.
Acting on her complaint, the Chandnibagh police had registered a first information report (FIR) against the trio.
However, the scrap dealer named in the FIR approached the police and filed a complaint at the superintendent of police’s (SP’S) office accusing the 40-year-old woman of honeytrap and extortion.
On the basis of his complaint, the SP constituted an SIT, which questioned the arrested woman and during the interrogation, name of the woman sub-inspector surfaced.
Following her disclosure and an inquiry, the police registered an FIR under Sections 203 (giving false information), 384
(extortion), 389 (putting a person in fear of accusation of offence in order to commit extortion) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 7, 8 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act against both women.
While the 40-year-old was arrested, the sub-inspector went incommunicado.
Panipat SP Manisha Chaudhary said, “She surrendered at the police station and was formally arrested by the SIT. She was taken in one-day remand and has been sent to judicial custody now.”
The SP said the woman was arrested under the charges of extortion and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
‘HUSBAND WAS ALCOHOLIC’
“On Sunday night, my elder sister Ritu called me and said that Poonam was strangulated by her husband and her mother-in-law at their house. Ever since their marriage, Poonam was being subjected to physical torture at the hands of her husband under influence of alcohol. Despite such behaviour, Poonam continued to earn for her family by teaching at a local private school. She is survived by a 12-year-old son,” he added.
A spokesperson of Shivaji Colony police said they have handed over the victim’s body to her brother following an autopsy.
“On the basis of Pramod Moudgil’s complaint , we have registered an FIR under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against her husband and mother-in-law, who are absconding. We have launched a manhunt to nab the accused,” he added.
