SRINAGAR:: A militant was killed and two soldiers succumbed to injuries as the gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district entered the second day on Tuesday, police said.

On Monday, security forces had shot dead two militants, hours after they killed three security personnel in a terror attack in Baramulla’s Watergam Kreeri. The militants had attacked a police party after they came out from dense apple orchards adjacent to the road.

Later, security forces had chased the militants into dense orchards resulting in the killing of two militants, including a top Lashkar-e-taiba commander Sajjad Haider. The operation was stopped late night and resumed in the morning.

Defense spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said one more terrorist was killed in the operation on Tuesday. “Now, three terrorists have been killed. An AK-17 and three pistols were recovered from the spot,” he added.

He said two soldiers who were critically injured have also succumbed. “The operation is still under progress and joint teams of army, police and the CRPF are on the spot,” the spokesman said.

Inspector general of police (IGP Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said the gunmen were suspected to be members of Lashkar-etaiba. Kumar said it seemed that the terrorists had changed their strategy in the Valley and are now attacking security checkpoints.

Police had identified two militants as locals from Baramulla district. However the identity of the militant who was killed on Tuesday is being ascertained.
