Seven members of 2 gangs held with arms, vehicles in Sangrur

SANGRUR : The police on Tuesday claimed to have busted two gangs in Sangrur district with the arrest of seven persons, including a woman, and recovery of 11 pistols, 52 cartridges, sharp-edged weapons and two cars.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said on a tip-off, the crime investigat­ion agency (CIA) on Monday arrested Satvir Kaur, the leader of a robbers’ gang, along with four others near Thaman Singh Wala village on the Bhawanigar­h-samana road when they were allegedly planning to target jewellery shops in Patiala and Samana towns.

The SSP said a .12 bore pistol, 2 cartridges, iron rods and a Hyundai Verna car were recovered from them. Besides Kaur (42), a resident of Balamgarh of Samana, the accused were identified as Ranjit Singh (27) of Meyond Kalan near Jakhal, Sandeep Singh, alias Popa (35) of Shahpur in Mohali district, Gurjit Singh (24), alias Sadhu of Meyond Kalan, and Amit Tyagi (26) of Samana.

A case was registered under Sections 399 (making preparatio­n to commit dacoity), 402 (assembling for the purpose of committing dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act at the Bhawanigar­h police station.

The SSP said the police also arrested two members of the Bagga Takhar gang near Malerkotla and recovered two .32 bore pistols, 10 cartridges and a Suzuki Alto car.

“The police also recovered eight country-made pistols and 40 cartridges from near a drain. The accused, identified as Aslam Khan, alias Maniyan of Naromajra and Mohammed Sajad, alias Ballu of Malerkotla, were planning to attack members of their rival gang,” he added.

A case was registered under Section 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at Malerkotla (city-1) police station.
