ROHTAK: Five days after income tax (I-T) teams conducted raids at firebrand Meham MLA Balraj Kundu and his associates to dig out clues about hidden wealth or financial irregularities, over 25 Khaps and farm unions held a meeting here on Tuesday to put their weight behind the independent legislator.

Hardeep Ahlawat, head of the Ahlawat Khap, said Khaps and farm unions conducted a meeting here to extend support to Kundu against whom I-T conducted raids last week.

“Raids were conducted at a time when Kundu is openly pumping his resources to support the current farmers’ agitation that has already pushed the BJP in Haryana on the back foot. The raids conducted at Kundu and his relatives’ premises were aimed at tamping Kundu. We will teach a lesson to the BJP in the upcoming elections. The government has reached such a low that it is using government machinery to defame and suppress the voice of the decent,” he added.

Satywan Narwal, state vicepresident of BKU (Charuni), said the farm unions are standing with Kundu, who is helping them by running a ‘rasoi’ at Tikri and extended help whenever required.

“The I-T raids were not conducted at Kundu’s house but on premises of labourers and farmers. The Khaps and farm unions will conduct rallies and meeting across state with Kundu to appraise people about the real face of government,” he added.

After the BJP retained power in October 2019 assembly polls with the help of 10 JJP MLAS, Kundu was one of the independent MLAS who also supported the government.

But his animosity with former BJP minister Manish Grover, who had to bite the dust in assembly polls, was at the root of hostilities between Kundu and CM Khattar.

The Meham MLA, in the last Budget session, was pressing for an independent probe into the alleged corruption by Grover.

But Khattar gave clean chit to Grover. Since then, Kundu has been pointing accusing fingers at Khattar’s clean image for having shielded Grover.
