Samples found to be sent for forensic checks only after narco test, say police

- Sanjeev K Jha

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police will send all exhibits found so far in the Shraddha Walkar murder case for forensic analysis only after Aaftab Amin Poonawala’s narco test, which is likely to take place on Monday, said officers aware of the matter.

A senior Delhi police officer, who is part of the team probing Walkar’s murder, said, “We have found some exhibits, including bones and bloodstains. But even if these are proved to be Walkar’s, it will be hard to prove that Poonawala is guilty.”

“We are waiting for the suspect’s narco test, which is expected to be conducted on Monday. It is vital, as it will definitely give us some major evidential leads in this case. We will provide all details to the FSL once Poonawala’s

narco test is done,” the officer added.

Though narco analysis generally does not have legal validity, the court may grant limited admissibility after considering the circumstances under which the test was obtained.

Poonawalla allegedly killed his girlfriend Walkar in their rented Chhattarpur Pahadi flat on May 18 this year.

The absence of eyewitnesses in the case has also caused the investigation team to focus on forensic evidence, said the officer quoted above.

“We can’t hold a suspect guilty of some crime merely on the basis of his statement before the police, stray evidence and media reports. Several teams are still working on the case as Poonawala’s statements have to be matched with evidence on the ground,” he said.
