SPEEDING CAR STOPPED NEAR RAISINA HILL, DRIVER DETAINED

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Friday stopped a speeding sports car at the Raisina Hill barricade — considered a high security zone between the north and south blocks — and detained the driver on charges of rash and dangerous driving.

The incident took minutes before Prme Minister Manmohan Singh’s carcade was scheduled to move out of the Parliament towards 7 Race Course Road.

Sources said, the car — a twoseater Mercedes bearing a UP number — was stopped while speeding towards Vijay Chowk.

The youngster behind the the wheels of the car was taken to the Boat Club police post for interrogation. “We have challaned the vehicle for rash driving. The man driving the car ahs been identified as Gaganmeet Singh. Further investigations are on,” said SBS Tyagi, DCP New Delhi.

The incident raised a few eyebrows because of the fact that the car managed to zip through the Raisina Hill barricade towards Rashtrapati Bhawan at a high speed on the wrong side of the road .

“The vehicle bore an unregistered number. The transport department is entitled to take action against vehicle owners who use unregistered numbers. We levy a penalty of `5, 000 for these kind of offences. And, if a vehicle dealer is involved in issuing such a number, then the department has the authority to blacklist the dealer, and take other legal action,” said Rachna Yaduvanshi ARTO Gautam Budh Nagar.
